Dig deeper at SERNEC, a consortium of southeastern herbaria.
For the most current and comprehensive body of information regarding violets in our region, visit the new website Violets (Violaceae) of the Great Plains and Eastern North America.
This species is smaller in stature than the very similar V. blanda and V. incognita, with the flowering stalks seldom more than 2-3 inches high. On mountain walks in spring, this species is occasionally encountered, almost always in seepages inside the forests, whereas V. blanda will be seen much more often, away from water. Read more at Vascular Plants of North Carolina.
Its glabrous leaf blades (occasionally with hirtellous petioles) and subentire to very shallowly crenate margins, unspotted cleistogamous capsule on an erect peduncle, and small dark brown to blackish seeds distinguish it from V. blanda and V. incognita. Read more in Weakley's Flora.

If a search such as "Carex leptalea var. leptalea" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "Carex leptalea".
Or, to minimize chances of a misspelling, try just "Carex le".
Less is more: If "pencil flower" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "pencil".
