Flowers similar to H. purpurea, per Wildflowers of the Eastern United States (Duncan & Duncan, 1999).

Our only Houstonia with basal leaves ciliate and present at flowering, per Wildflowers of the Eastern United States (Duncan & Duncan, 1999).
