Dig deeper at SERNEC, a consortium of southeastern herbaria.
This is a rare case of non-wetland species of Juncus - usually in thin soil over a flat rock surface. Lopsided Rush is very similar to the ubiquitous Path Rush (J. tenuis), but the lowest involucral leaf is shorter than the inflorescence and the leaf sheath auricle is very short (vs. prolonged). If a search such as "Carex leptalea var. leptalea" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "Carex leptalea".
Or, to minimize chances of a misspelling, try just "Carex le".
Less is more: If "pencil flower" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "pencil".
