The text in FNA (2002) makes plain the fact that the 2 varieties of Muehlenberg's Sedge are not very distinct. Perigynia of var. muehlenbergii normally have 5-9 veins (vs. var. enervis without veins) and are larger than those of var. enervis. Read more at Vascular Plants of North Carolina.
