Dig deeper at SERNEC, a consortium of southeastern herbaria.
Fernald and others have described up to 5 forms and varieties of J. canadensis, based on variation in flower and capsule size (from 2.5 mm to nearly 4.0 mm), shape of the glomerules (densely flowered and subglobose to few-flowered and turbinate), and structure and size of the inflorescence (congested to open). Further study is necessary to determine whether any of these taxa should be recognized. Read more in Weakley's Flora (2023).
Among the members of section Ozophyllum, J. canadensis has large heads and smooth green stems. The capsules and seeds are large but noticeably smaller than J. caesariensis and J. trigonocarpus, per Weakley's Flora (2023).

If a search such as "Carex leptalea var. leptalea" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "Carex leptalea".
Or, to minimize chances of a misspelling, try just "Carex le".
Less is more: If "pencil flower" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "pencil".
